OUR APPROACH

The Barkby Estate’s vision is to create a special legacy in Thorpebury. A high quality development, it will provide homes for local people including affordable housing. These will be delivered alongside new facilities and infrastructure so this will be a truly sustainable 21st Century community.

In order to realise this vision, The Estate appointed CEG to create a masterplan and work with a select number of housebuilders, handpicked for their ability to bring forward high quality development.

CEG specialises in the creation of thriving communities, creating space for lives to flourish, for neighbourhoods to grow and for businesses to develop. We have been recognised and awarded for our approach to placemaking, community engagement, design and approach to sustainability. Together with the Land Trust and their 5 key Charitable Objectives, the community will be at the heart of this new development.

CEG worked hard to involve local residents in the evolution of this sustainable new community. Such a large-scale proposal is always a difficult and we were conscious that there would be many differing views.

In 2013, CEG established a liaison group. Involving representatives from Charnwood Borough Council, Leicester City Council, Barkby & Barkby Thorpe Parish Council, Thurmaston Parish Council, Hamilton Residents Association, BABTAG and ‘Duck Pond’ residents. Guests have also been invited from neighbouring Syston and Queniborough Councils, local schools and churches. The group meets up to four times a year and is now a formal organisation, helping to create a community that will be a sustainable and welcoming place to live and work.
