The earliest description of Barkby, as of most English villages, occurs in Domesday Book compiled in 1086, where its name was written Barcheberie, taken to mean the village by Birch trees.
The current Barkby Estate’s origins began in the early Medieval period. It has remained within the same family ownership since and has a strong relationship with the village.
In the late 17th Century, the Estate delivered the Pochin School, Barkby village’s only primary school. It was handed over to the education authority in 1944, which continues to provide an outstanding school for children from Barkby, as well as Thurmaston and Queninborough.
Thorpebury will provide a legacy over the next two decades; from much-needed new homes, including affordable homes for local people, to jobs, community facilities and extensive, accessible green open spaces for all to use.
Designed in a way that protects and conserves the features and landscape of the site, Thorpebury will be a 21st Century sustainable community for the next generations.
